Your Questions

Why is it that any alarm clock I buy will ring (briefly) in the middle of the night?

I’ve bought half a dozen or more alarm clocks in the last 4 years or so — both analog and digital. All of them work fine almost all the time; but every one of them, once set, will occasionally ring (very briefly) in the middle of the night. Another 20, 30, or 40 days might go by before I’ll encounter the same disturbing behavior.

What can I do to get an alarm clock that won’t intrude into my sleep uninvited?

  1. learn how to setup the clock, or may be there is a clock ghost in your home

  2. I go with the Ghost answer. I have seen clocks with a weekely or even daily timer setting, but never one thats on a 20, 30 or 40 day cycle.

Also, are you sure its the clock thats ringing?..perhaps its a phone that rings briefly, and by the time it wakes you up, you just think it’s a clock. At one time I had a phone number that was very close to a business’s fax number. Occasional, at 1 or 2 am, the phone would ring, and if picked up, you could hear the fax sound on the line, then it would drop off. Nect time it happens, see if there is a strange number on your caller id that wasn there before you went to sleep.

Also, instead of an alarm clock, if you have a cell phone, use the built in alarm on that. Most people don’t even remeber its there.

Good luck, and hope that you get some sleep!

  3. You’re probably hearing the beep from an electronic telephone. Every so often the central office sends a short, sharp impulse through the wires. This isn’t enough to set off the ringer of an old-fashioned mechanical-ringer phone, but it’ll produce a beep from a lot of electronic phones.

The reason they send the impulse to your telephone is to clean off all the electrical contacts in your telephone line. This greatly reduces noise and improves reliability.
